2013 Good Friday Walk

On Friday we joined other Detroiters on the Good Friday Walk, a yearly tradition of the Detroit Peace Community.  This year, most of us wrote a station or two.  See the booklet attached.  Cover art by Lucy Wylie-Kellermann.

Loyola in Detroit Day 4

This morning the group headed down to St. Peter's Church to help pack seeds for the Garden Resource Program.  Working together we prepared packages of Swiss Chard seeds to be given to gardeners in the spring.

Later, we helped with some chores around Advent House.  We chopped up tree branches and added wood chips to the chicken coop.  Along the way some great pictures of chickens were taken.

Next we headed to a public meeting on the Emergency Financial Manger proposal in Detroit.  We had the privilege to hear religious leaders, elected officials, and community members express their concern about defending voting rights.  There was much passion in the room and the energy to organize impressed us all.

Afterward, we took the People Mover around downtown to see its route and some of the sites of the city.  Finally, we drove to Dearborn to enjoy a meal at a Middle Eastern restaurant.

Loyola in Detroit Day 3

On our 3rd day in the D we enjoyed an early morning at the Manna Meal where we able to make sandwiches and serve food to the members of the community. After lunch, we sat down with Bill Wylie Kellerman and discussed gentrification and its affects on the city, as well as restorative justice. Afterwards, he took us on a minitour of Cork Town.

Luke, from the Jeanie Wylie Community, showed us the chicken coop in the backyard of the community house.

We ate dinner at the house of the Jesuit Volunteers of Detroit. One of the Jesuit Volunteers was a Loyola Chicago alum and a brother of the service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, just like Sam! It was great to have two brothers reunite in such an awesome way as they both are on service experiences.
After dinner, Rich Weiske, also known as The Bee Man, came to talk to the group about his experiences as a bee keeper.
Sam and Brittany pose with a "Detroit D" candle that Rich made, as well as the "8 Mile" honey.

Loyola in Detroit Day 2

Our second day in Detroit started out with a tour of D-Town farms, run by the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network. There we toured the farm, including checking out the compost, bee keeping, and hoop houses. We also discussed current political and management issues facing Detroit.

After lunch we worked at Jeremy and Jess' farm in Brightmoor, a neighborhood known as the "Farmway" because of the large amount of farms in the neighborhood. There, we sampled spinach, cleaned out a hoop house, and helped construct a berm by filling it with scrap wood. The berm will be covered with dirt and used as increased planting area, with different crops planted in specific areas.

In the evening we had a delicious dinner at Mari and Lydia's house on Larkins and some great conversation. We ended the evening with a movie screening.
